Foundation of Novell Netware (50-677)

Foundation of Novell Netware (50-677)

The Foundation of Novell Netware (50-677) exam is a prerequisite for NetWare 6 Certified NetWare Engineer (CNE), Certified Netware Administrator (CNA), as well as Certified NetWare Instructor (CNI).

The exam will not be a brainteaser, which is a treat!! What I mean is, you would not have to rehearse on the Webster dictionary along with your reference resources before you take your exam. Novell exams always test your analytical skills, the basic understanding of Netware 6 concepts, and of course the speed with which you can troubleshoot any situation.

Who is the Netware Exam for?
Thus far the Netware exams have always been administration centric, that is, they have concentrated a lot on the day-to-day tasks of an administrator, such as user creation, resource allocation, security, printing environment, etc. The courses of Netware have religiously covered all these in their objectives and stuck to it over a period of time.

With Netware 6, Novell has turned a new leaf in its education pattern. The topic under discussion, i.e., the Foundation of Novell Networking, will bring to you a refreshing change from the old nagging pattern. Here you do not get to drag yourself through the evolution pattern of Networking since Old Stone Age. You do not have to tweak cables, identify data transfer patterns of NICs (Network Interface Cards), or try hard to remember the encoding pattern of data on a cable. This course purely lays the foundation for the rest of the course, as the name itself suggests. You will be getting a brief summary of the entire course to come, and will begin to feel your way about Netware 6, and start getting comfortable with it.

By now you must have an idea of whom the course is meant for? If you are a fresh graduate deciding on a career, it is definitely not for you. Since this course doesn't even scrape the basics of networking, you will be lost.

Here is a note for the CNIs aspiring to upgrade themselves. You can no longer go through the upgrade exam and leave the rest of the tough part for the lesser fortunate candidates/students. You need to take not only the upgrade exam here to retain the CNE 6 Certification, but also the CNA 6 exams to be able to teach this Foundation For Novell Networking course. This is because the course and its objectives are so different from the previous exams of CNE/CNA that you will have to go through it yourself to be able to see the difference and teach it too.

Information About the Exam Schedule

As of Oct 31, 2003, the exams are scheduled for retirement. The ones who are holding the previous certification and are planning to upgrade will have to do so as quickly as possible. For those with average capabilities it should take at least 4 months to complete the workshop training, go through the entire courseware, and prepare and practice enough as much as possible to take up the exam and complete it.

For those with high capabilities, go ahead and Install Netware 6, grab an administrators' hand book from the stall, practice enough, go through every option and screen that is there to see in the NOS (Network Operating System), cite as many differences as you can from Netware 5 to Netware 6, and you are ready for the exam in 2 months.

For those who are busy and may not be able to upgrade themselves and are worried about their current validity status, here's a breather. Novell does not threaten to revoke your status if you fail to upgrade and thus belittle or undermine your previous efforts and the time spent on the certification. When your certification ID will be checked or verified with Novell, it may state that you are still certified but not with the latest upgrade version, or something close.

Well, this is as of now and it would be advisable for you to check up on this status on the Novell site, when you are actually ready for the exam. The site is constantly updated on product's technical documentation and training information.

Illumination on the Exam Pattern
You will not have the luxury of check-marking a question that irritates you so that you can go back to it later on. The exam pattern is not flexible. Every question you face will have to be dealt with and put out of the way for good, before proceeding to the next. There will be 68 of them, a good and healthy combination of visual items (drag-n-drop), multiple-choice multiple-answers, multiple-choice single-answer, situation related testing, etc.

If you are upgrading to CNE 6, be sure to score at least 610 (the actual passing score was 608, the last I know), if it is the CNI Certification you are pursuing, make sure you score 670 (actual score is 668).

Again the testing patterns and the passing scores could have changed after this or just before you take up yours. The patterns and scores have a way of changing once in a while to keep the aspirants on their toes. So there is no definite rule to this. The key to pass this exam is to KNOW Novell Netware 6 to your best ability.

As I already said, Novell exams are a treat because they test you for what you know and gently tell you what you don't. So, the fear of exam is lost. Provided, you are well prepared and you know how to prepare.

How to Prepare for the Exam
The best hand holding you can expect for an exam of this caliber comes with its price, the Instructor-led training. You get the maximum possible help for an exam when you take up the course, the best training aids for making the training interesting and understandable, the best lab practices and the setup at your disposal, with least worry about the reading material.

It is obvious that there is no comparison to the courseware released by Novell as far as reading and reference material goes. Lots of product information can be obtained from Novell's site itself and all the white papers put together will give a very good and detailed picture of the product you are trying to master.

Even for aspirants who believe in self-help, Novell does release this courseware for purchase if you'd rather study by yourself at your own convenient pace and time. The details for Exam codes and course codes are given below:

Also, it is advisable to constantly check the same site mentioned above for the table that displays the retiring dates of exams.

Coming back to preparations, self-study would be ideal, especially if you are comfortable with Novell products and have prior experience with them. Instructor-led training is more from the book and limits the scope to that. With self-study, if you decide to concentrate on something the course does not, there is no stopping you. The best way to learn is to make mistakes; you always learn better with mistakes. Unfortunately, there is very little scope for mistakes in Instructor-led training, as most of it is spoon-feeding.

About postgrad study: Why

About postgrad study: Why
choose from ? why when where taught courses research degrees applying action plan costs funding studying abroad contacts and resources

  1. I really enjoy my subject
  2. I need it to pursue my chosen career
  3. It will make me stand out from the crowd
  4. I want to convert to a new career area
  5. I don't know what to do - this will give me more time to decide
  6. My tutors suggested I take this course.

There is no right reason to choose postgraduate study as an option, but some reasons are more positive than others.

I really enjoy my subject
This is a highly motivating reason to do a higher degree. It’s worth considering the long-term implications of your choice though. Does your choice of course fit in with your long-term career plans? That does not mean that you should only consider postgraduate programmes related to your area of work interest. All further study programmes will enable you to develop skills that you could market to an employer. Some, however, will be of more use to you than others.

I need it to pursue my chosen career
Some career areas do require a professional qualification, for example: university lecturing, law, teaching, librarianship or clinical psychology. For other employment areas a postgraduate qualification, although not essential, will provide a distinct advantage to applicants, particularly when competition for places is fierce. Research the area of work that interests you to identify whether a postgraduate course would be necessary or advantageous.

It will make me stand out from the crowd
This is probably the most common reason that students give for choosing postgraduate study. Look at job adverts and research the area of work you wish to enter to identify whether potential employers view applicants more favourably with postgraduate qualifications. In some cases a postgraduate qualification will enhance job prospects. In other cases, however, relevant experience is more valuable, and so your time could be used more effectively undertaking related voluntary work.

I want to convert to a new career area
Many postgraduate programmes provide a way of converting to particular career areas. These may be taught Masters or diploma/certificate qualifications. Courses are available in a wide range of other career areas, for example, the MSc Information Technology, which is aimed at non-IT graduates wishing to work within the field of computing. For non-law students (and Scottish law students) wishing to convert to law in England and Wales, there is the Common Professional Examination (CPE)/Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), a one-year programme that includes all the core elements of a law degree.

It is also possible to convert to a new career area through employment. Many recruiters offer employment opportunities for graduates of any discipline and provide the relevant professional training in a wide range of career areas including information technology, accountancy, personnel and marketing.

I don't know what to do - this will give me more time to decide
Past experience suggests undertaking a further year or more of study to get careers inspiration is not necessarily helpful. If you choose a course for this reason, it is important to use the duration of the course to actively research what options are open to you, what skills you have to offer and what you want out of a job. What jobs would suit me? is a useful tool to help with this process.

My tutors suggested I take this course
Students are sometimes offered postgraduate places by their tutors, possibly with a guarantee of funding attached. Understandably this can seem a very tempting offer but it does not mean it is the right option for you. Is the course or research programme of real interest to you and does it link with your long-term career goals? Postgraduate study may be a very appropriate option but is staying at the same university the right option, or are there other institutions that are more appropriate for the area you wish to study? Successful completion of a postgraduate course requires a great deal of commitment and motivation, so choosing the course that is right for you is essential.

Java Certification

Java Certification
Since its inception in 1995, Java technology has grown in popularity and usage because of its true portability, and so has the esteemed Sun Java Certification. The Java platform allows you to run the same application on different operating systems.

Sun Certifications are well recognized in the developers' community. Sun has a range of certifications starting from the entry-level Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) to high-level certifications such as Sun Certified Enterprise Architect (SCEA). The new Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) title is one of the hottest emerging certifications in the industry (it barely missed making it to the CertCities' list of the 10 Hottest Certifications for 2003). Perhaps one of the reasons why Sun Certifications are so popular is that the exams are generally viewed as fairly challenging. Sun also offers Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer (SCMAD) Certification, which tests your skills in the wireless technologies.

Keeping up with the technological developments, Sun now offers Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services (SCDJWS) Certification exam. It certifies developers who create web services applications using Java technology components such as those supported by the Java Web Services Developer Pack and the Java 2, Enterprise Edition 1.4 platform.
Java Certification : When should you think of it?
Learning a technology and working on a technology complements each other. Learning a technology gives you the overview of how things need to be done. And working on a technology helps you understand the in-depth details of getting work done using that technology. Most of the time, when you are working on a project you cover certain specific areas of technology required in that project.

Java has evolved from being a language to develop platform independent client application to providing the architecture for developing N-tier enterprise application. It is important that you keep yourself updated with all the changes so that you are not left behind with obsolete systems. Taking certifications and update exams is a structured way of updating yourself with the technology. Therefore you should think of Java Certification from the day you decide to work on it.
Java Certification : Which one should you take?
Sun has identified 3 job profiles for those working with Java. You can choose the profile depending on your current working domain or the domain you wish to diversify into.
Programmer: Anyone who has a basic understanding of Java (Standard Edition) and can write code for well-defined design applications can be a programmer and the corresponding certification is SCJP.
SCJP: A Sun Certified Java Programmer uses J2SE technologies to demonstrate the programming competence on Java platform.

Developer: An SCJP having good knowledge of design principles and competence to apply them to develop large software applications can be a developer. The certifications that can strengthen the career path of a developer are SCWCD, SCBCD, SCMAD and SCDJWS.
SCWCD: A Sun Certified Web Component Developer develops J2EE applications using web components.
SCBCD: A Sun Certified Business Component Developer develops business applications using EJBs and J2EE technologies.
SCMAD: A Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer is an experienced J2EE/J2SE programmer who has diversified into the mobile applications development arena.
SCDJWS: A Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services has a standard level of proficiency with web services, as well as with the Java technologies that support web services.

Architect: For an experienced java professional designing or aspire to design large enterprise systems with dozens, or hundreds of servers, the right certification would be SCEA or Sun Certified Enterprise Architect.
SCEA: A Sun Certified Enterprise Architect produces an enterprise architecture using J2EE technologies.
